FUNCTIONS

1. Disperses Stagnant Liver Qi, Harmonises Liver and Spleen, relieve pain. Vents pathogenic factor
INDICATIONS
1. Liver attacking the Spleen:
Distending pain over chest and hypchondrium or spasmodic abdominal pain, loose stool or diarrhea, restlessness, irritability, insomnia, cold extremities while rest of body is warm. T- normal or red tipped. P- wiry.
2. Lesser Yin stage disorder with Heat constraining the Yang Qi: Fever, distention and pain in the hypchondrium and abdomen, nausea, bitter taste in the mouth diarrhea, cold extremities T- red with a yellow coat P- wiry rapid.
APPLICATIONS: Stress, depression neurosis, gastritis, pancreatitis, peptic ulcers, enteritis, irritable bowel syndrome, allergic colitis, premenstrual syndrome, dysmenorrhea, menopausal syndrome, irregular menstruation, mastitis, fibrocystic breasts, lower abdominal pain, neuralgia, hysteria, epilepsy, hepatitis, neurotic diarrhea, mouth ulcers.
INGREDIENTS
Bupleurum chinensis- 柴胡 Chái hú- Bupleurum root
Paeonia lactiflora- 白芍 Bái sháo- White peony root
Citrus aurantium- 枳实  Zhǐ shí- Immature bitter orange
Glycyrrhiza uralensis-甘草 Gān cǎo- Chinese licorice
CONTRAINDICATIONS: Yin deficiency
COMMENTS: This formula was originally developed to treat Yang or Hot- Collapse due to pathogenic Heat invading the Interior and constraining the Yang Qi. This occurs at the lesser Yin (Shao YIn) stage of a Shang Han (Cold Induced) disorder. It is now more commonly used to treat rebellious Liver Qi as described above.
